Learnalong!

Things I learned:

- It seems that during the filming of Cujo, the dog playing Cujo was so friendly and fun-loving that he kept wagging his tail during important scenes.

- The website for the Viking division of Penguin publishing misspells "Colombia" and omits the accents from Gabriel García Márquez's name. What a bunch of saps!

Learnalong with Edward

While doing some learning on this lovely morning, I discovered (why had I not researched this topic earlier in life?) that the sperm whale is so named because people used to believe that the massive quantities of of a white substance in their enormous* heads was sperm. (That's the first thing I learned.) Then I learned that the substance (actually spermaceti** oil) is found in two places within the head - the "spermaceti organ" or "case," and also an organ known, even to scientists, as the "junk."

I love learning.

COMPREHENSION EXERCISE

1. Please explain, in clear terms, drawing on some of the vocabulary in the article, what we learned today.

* 5 to 6 meters in males
** It translates to "whale sperm" or literally "sperm of the sea monster"; like the animal's name, this refers to the belief that the animals heads were full of sperm.

Never Stop Learning, Friends

My program of watchful autodidacticism led me this afternoon to the discovery that both Skid Row and Mötley Crüe have (different) songs entitled "Rattlesnake Shake." Kudos to Mötley Crüe for their Red, White, and Crüe tour, and kudos to me for learning!
